Antibiotic Basics for Clinicians: Choosing the Right Antibacterial Agent (Point (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins))
Designed for quick, easy comprehension, this handbook reference will assist medical students in understanding the rationale behind antibiotic selection for common bacterial pathogens and infectious disease presentations. By supplying the rationale for choosing antibiotics, the book reduces the amount of memorization necessary for proper antibiotic prescribing. The book is heavily illustrated with two-color figures and includes fact-anecdotes, interesting ancillary information, mnemonics, and questions to test understanding. Appendices include dosing in adults and children; antibacterial agents in pregnancy; generic and trade names of commonly used antibacterial agents; and treatment of infections caused by bacterial agents of bioterrorism.

Review Doody's Book Review -- "This is a wonderful manual for medical students and residents who are learning the intricacies of antimicrobial agents...The book achieves its objectives in a succinct and successful manner. It helps readers understand how antibiotics work and when and where they are used in clinical situations...Although written at the level of medical students and residents, the book easily can be used by pharmacy students and nurses for any infectious disease or microbiology course...it accomplishes in very little time what the student learner needs to know about antibiotic usage. The price is modest and affordable for its intended audience of students. Such a book is a bargain." Weighted Numerical Score: 85 - 3 Stars Doody's Review Service -- Overall, this is a straightforward, thorough review book for psychiatry. It is well organized, comprehensive, and easy to use. Its outline format will certainly appeal to some students, and the USMLE-style questions and answers should help them prepare for their licensing exams. This is a very good contribution to the field of review books for psychiatry. Weighted Numerical Score: 100 - 5 stars! School of Pharmacy, 01-JAN-08, Amy L. Pakyz -- "If students, residents, and practicing physicians invest their time in reading this book, they will be rewarded with a good antibacterial review that brings together microbiology, pharmacology, and disease state management that will make the question "which antibiotic should this patient be receiving" less overwhelming."
Most helpful customer reviews 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great resource By Heidi H. Cross Excellent information. I am a new nurse practitioner and did not get this info in NP school. Really explains bacterial biological processes and how antibiotics target them, then reviews various bacteria, followed by usual therapies for the most common disease states. It finishes up with clinical scenarios and review questions, as well as helpful tables. Loved it, and plan to periodically review it. I had a lot of "AHA" moments. What does this book lack? It should explain how to read a culture and sensitivity report, and the concept of minimum inhibitory concentration. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent text By Don T. This book is excellent for those who either have no background with antibiotics or need a good review. The information is presented thoroughly and effectively. I would rate this book five starts and highly recommend it to everyone. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Boring By Kevin Lapin Big disappointment. This book was quite boring and did not really add any helpful pneumonics, algorithyms or approaches to antibiotic choice or therapy. I do not believe this book adds anything to current teaching or even apps like Johns Hopkins Abx or Epocrates. Was hoping to learn more, but except for repeated analogies to castles, not sure what this book had to offer. See all 8 customer reviews...

Endocrine fellows will find it particularly useful, but practicing endocrinologists and even internists with an interest in endocrinology will find it helpful as well. Despite its many authors, the book does not seem at all disjointed. Negrao Greenspan's has the basics: it is well written, the information is accurate and the ratio price/value is worth buying. Experts will probably be keen on recommending it for neophites and it will surely be a fair advice. 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. best endo book around By Kimberly A. Fields This text includes info on some things such as tests that are difficult to find elsewhere. It is easy to read and understand. My favorite endo book and most trusted resource. 5 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Wordy, too few figures, glides over key concepts By Branden I'm a second year medical student an purchased this book for my endocrinology course. I find the style of writing and lack of figures difficult to follow. The authors can quickly glide over key concepts and delve into great depth on clinically unimportance information. The authors thrive on the nuances that a second year medical student is less interested in. I prefer to read Harrison's internal medicine, NEJM review articles relevant to material, and my class lectures notes. I've tried hard to get into this book: a solid 6-8 hours, but I recommend against this book for medical students. See all 5 customer reviews...

Review -- 2nd Edition review: "It offers a succinct approach to basic study of philosophy, concept and theory development as related to nursing. It then provides a range of theories from a variety of sciences. It provides a framework in which to view nursing theorists and theories and does a nice job of presenting key components of these theories in a standardized format." -- 2nd Edition review: "It is well organized and the topic areas are thorough. The authors clearly and succinctly present information relevant to the topics at hand. The use of subheadings was particularly helpful in guiding the flow of content. The tables provided were also very helpful in highlighting key concepts and in the provision of definitions. I thought the book provided extremely helpful resources after each chapter, such as internet site addresses directly relevant to the content discussed. Overall, every aspect of this book, content and format, was very good." -- 2nd Edition review "There's a good foundational discussion in Chap. 1. The discussion of philosophy--theory development--analysis is well developed. The inclusion of new contemporary theories..."

Egas This is a great book as a quick review and by using this book as your sole review source you could probably answer many questions of the test, but dont expect to ace it! This book is good (but not great) on many chapters specially on developement and psychopathology (enough to get the big clinical picture), but it is very weak on biostats. So if your looking for biostats, go look somewhere else! If you want to study from the best source there is, there's not much left... try kaplan notes and lectures wich I found best..4 Stars for all the vital details I consider this book is lacking.. but stillit is an outstanding of review. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Required for school By D. Kraft It wasn't too boring, but was bland to read. I thought the authors were redundant and overly opinionated on certain topics. Its a "teaching" text, and the authors came across as providing their view rather than objective. 5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Best Review outside of Kaplan By Alvaro E. Galvis If you are not into the Kaplan format or don't have time this is the book for you. The chapter are short and to the point. You can maximize your Board score by looking at the chapters in Biostats (guaranteed to ghave at least 2 questions per block on this subject). Look into it and if you need a bit more details I suggest either the Goljan High Yield Notes or Kaplan Behavioral Sciences. See all 20 customer reviews...

Most helpful customer reviews 81 of 83 people found the following review helpful. Best Kinesiology Textbook for Joint Mechanics! By Dr. Joseph Muscolino As an Instructor of Musculoskeletal anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology classes, Chiropractor, and author of books on the musculoskeletal system, I buy and read most every book published on the subject of kinesiology. Donald Neumann's book on Kinesiology is hands-down the absolute best kinesiology textbook out for joint mechanics. His book is clearly written in a straight-forward manner that makes it accessible to most anyone and yet it is also the most thorough book on this subject. Further, Elisabeth Rowan's illustrations are the best I have ever seen in a kinesiology text; they are sharp and clear, enabling 3-Dimensional movement to be easily visualized on a 2-Dimensional page. I believe that this book is a must for any student of the musculoskeletal system! 33 of 36 people found the following review helpful. Excels in explaining 3D motion on the 2D page By Running Mom Very clear explanations of movement systems. The book is divided into regions of the body and a chapter on gait. The illustrations are excellent and help the reader to make connections between the body and outside and muscular forces acting on it. Highly recommended, esp. for those who took a kinesio course a while ago, and could use a good reference and refresher to apply to the clinic. 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Tip-Top By P. McCall This was a text in my master's program, I now work developing education programs for personal trainers and use Neumann's book as a prime reference. Most helpful customer reviews 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Book! Provides techniques to talk to different kinds of patients. By MRK It is much easier to learn the Krebs cycle than learning how to talk to patients. This book is a great reference. It helps you structure your approach to different kinds of patient. From the ones, you think, are "great and compliant" patients but you cannot seem to get his/her blood pressure or blood sugars under control; to the ones you want to run away from whenever you see them on your schedule. The book provides core principles on the the usual clinical scenarios, from obtaining a good history & physical, to providing a diagnosis, to discussing treatment options and following up on the treatment plans. It also provides very difficult clinical scenarios, like dealing with an angry patient or giving a bad diagnosis, and even giving bad news to a family member. You can easily master Bates' ;-) Learning how to understand and approach people in real life, clinical situations is not easy. The book provides basic knowledge, concrete tools/techniques to communicate with patients effectively. 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Decent, but a bit Obvious... By Samwise I think this book was decent, but in my opinion it had a very "staged"/fake feel to some of the physician/patient dialogues/examples. Also, although it was minimul, there were definate disagreements with Bates'. In my opinion, you should just get Bates. But this is again a decent book for students. 0 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent! By Kimberly A. Gray A couple hours after ordering the book off of amazon I got an email from the seller informing me that he got the order and that he would put it in the mail by the next day. I got it very quickly and it was in the condition that was listed. Absolutely no complaints! See all 3 customer reviews...

Review Schlossberg's work gives new meaning to the word illustration... An excellent basic reference for functional anatomy. (Biology Teacher )Provides an easily understood introduction to the inner workings of the human body. With emphasis on function as well as structure, the beautifully illustrated guide maps anatomical systems and organs. (Science News ) Review Originally composed for medical students, this thorough reference guide is basic enough to help lay readers understand how human organs work and what happens when they don't. Unlocking vertebrae and cutting off layers of skin, the numerous color illustrations are anything but pretty, but they capture, with detail rare in introductory works, the interconnecting functions that help the human body survive. (Los Angeles Times )The illustrations—most in color—are scientifically accurate and artistically beautiful... The text is uniformly of high quality. (Science Books and Films )The artwork is first-class... A book which anyone with an interest in anatomy would be pleased to own. (Nursing Times ) About the Author Leon Schlossberg has taught art as applied to medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has designed numerous biological teaching aids, including two widely used model skeletons, also available from the Johns Hopkins University Press. George D. Zuidema, M.D., formerly Warfield M. Firor Professor of Surgery and Director of the Department of Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, is Vice Provost for Medical Affairs and Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan.
Most helpful customer reviews 15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Excellent anatomical pictures! By A Customer This book is a very good book for a beginning medical student. I bought it as a reference book for my medical transcription work because of the color plates (I hope Amazon prints a sample of one of the colored pages so buyers can appreciate how good the book is; they did print a list of the color plates). The illustrations are very good and very detailed, showing exactly where everything is inside the human body. What's more, the illustrations are meticulously and completely labelled in detail! This is what made me buy the book. It helps me visualize where the anatomical part is positioned while transcribing, which gives me a good idea of what to expect when a physician dictates a particular procedure on that part. There are write-ups by doctors prior to each illustration, so you can refer back to it every so often to understand how things work and tie up together. A sample of pictures are: the complete illustration of the anatomical man, fetal circulation (with amazing close-up details of the placenta), the skeletal system, muscular system (with muscles, ligaments, fasciae, tendons, bursae), shoulder and hip joints, inguinal regions, hernias, development of blood cells, lymphatics, a really big picture of the anatomical ear, mechanics of vision, and a composite anatomy of the vascular system based upon arteriograms and venograms. This is by no means a definitive anatomy book (it is only 166 pages). For advanced med students this is not recommended. But for those without a medical background but who work in the associated fields of the medical profession (nurses and transcriptionists among others), this is a good summary-of-the-anatomy book. 8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Johns Hopkins Atlas of Human Functional Anatomy By John Slye This is an excellent reference for anyone who is studying functional human anatomy. Most helpful customer reviews 9 of 13 people found the following review helpful. look out By A Customer What a worthless book. The illustrations are homemade, hand-drawn scribble. Read the "key"ed facts in BRS or get Robbins Review if you need help solidifying the pathology. I'll bet it was the authors who posted these bogus "5 star" reviews immediately after the book was published. The reviews sound identical, they're all from the same place in TX, and they over-enthusiastically give themselves 5 stars. It's wholly overpriced... be cautious. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great for Systems Courses By Medical student This book is incredibly helpful in learning the systems courses in medical school as it is arranged in such a fashion. Not only is it great because of how it helps as a memory tool, but the information is on target even more so then First Aid in my opinion. My advice is to get this book before you go through your systems courses and add to the pictures as you go along. Then you have a lot of the information for a disease right there in one picture and when boards come around you can refer back to it. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great for a visual learner; take it to your lectures! By Tina M. Gardner This book is an invaluable addition to medical education. Most helpful customer reviews 34 of 36 people found the following review helpful. Excellent; the only book you need. By Derek C. Underhill (dereku@hotmail.com) I bought this book, along with every other PCAT book I could find. I studied and studied all of them up until test day. When I took the exam (10/99), the only book whose questions were similar to the actual test was this one. The other books are WAY too in-depth. Overkill might be a good thing on other exam preps, but here, over-studying could lead to burn-out, and failure to miss the big picture. Granted, I'm a graduate student in Pharmacology, but this book is the best prep I read. Pick up this book and the HighYield series in Biology and General Chemistry. Forget the rest. 21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Caution! By Chadd I am writing this review on March 15,2003. I have just taken the PCAT 7 hours ago for the first time. This book will help you famaliarize yourself with the PCAT test format. The verbal reasoning, chemistry and biology sections are the best for getting you prepared for what will be on the PCAT in those sections. However, the Quantitative and Reading Comprehension on the PCAT is much more difficult that what is in the Barron's book so watch out! The main word of warning is this- the time alloted in the Barron's book for taking their practice tests is a lot more than what is on the actual PCAT. Example- on the PCAT that I just took, we only had 30 minutes to do the Quantitative. You will have 45 minutes on the actual PCAT when doing the Reading Comprehension section if I can remember correctly. Don't let that fool you. That is not a lot of time to do that section. You must keep moving. Watch your time closely when doing the Chemistry, Quatitative and Reading Comprehension sections and use the times that you will do on the actual PCAT, not what the Barron's book gives you or you will find yourself in turmoil when you take the exam. Just food for thought! Good Luck! 14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Source By amshds@yahoo.com I felt that the questions were an excellent representation of the types and wording of the questions on the PCAT. The most helpful was the outlines of each section, there were questions over every topic. The time this book gives you for each section is a little inflated over what the real time limits of the PCAT test is. Overall a great source of information. See all 51 customer reviews...

Tutor During my OB/Peds rotation for nursing school I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful this little pocket book was. I found myself looking up interventions that were really useful. I liked that it had all the more common complications and diseases of childhood and pregnancy. I would recommend this book for anyone that needs a quick reference to help with questioning instructors. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. obpeds notes By valmal This product was very helpful during my OB/Peds rotation. I used it in medical school, and now that I'm a neurology resident, I *still* use it. Has enough depth to be useful, but not overwhelming. Easy to read. Tends to cover the pimpable/testable highlights. Good summary tables. 29 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Get it for Step I 'cause First Aid doesn't cut it By 46&2 First Aid is money for most subjects, but it's weak on neuro. This book is a very good balance between too little and too much for this overwhelming subject. The High Yield series keeps improving in quality, and in the newest edition is even better at showing clinical scenarios and integrating other subjects like pathology or physiology (I used an older version and it's still pretty good, though).I would like to say this is great for course work, but at least at my school they tended to test on obscure minituae hard to find anywhere. This is all you should need for Step, which does feature a decent dose of neuro (about 10, more like 20 questions). It's also very good at developing as essential foundation of knowledge applicable for future use, which sometimes gets lost when scrambling to cram for course exams. My big qualm is the pricing. It's a thin book, not a main text. Use the library, borrow it from a friend, split the cost, etc. High Yield makes a nice line of books but they need to trim prices for medical students. 19 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Ideal for USMLE review By Umber76 This is the book for Step 1 USMLE review. It covers all the essential details of this heavily tested subject. Must be coupled with an atlas since recognizing gross pictures and as well as comfort with imaging is vital for the USMLE. For coursework, it is advisable to use a more substantial book. Neuroanatomy is a tough subject that cannot be crammed. It is essential to lay down a strong base during the semester. See all 31 customer reviews...

By Lifelong Learner I took the PCAT October 20, 2007, and this was the only book I used to prepare for the exam. The practice tests in this book are a joke, and they will lull you into a false sense of security. The PCAT is MUCH, MUCH harder than this book would have you think. If you are a future PCAT taker, I have this advice for you: STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK! If you need to prepare for the PCAT, use an MCAT prep book instead. Your money would be better spent that way. Don't make the same mistake I did. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!!! 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Maybe add some MCAT practice to your study By Jay B. Cutts I've taught the PCAT and the MCAT and think that it can be helpful for PCAT students to also work on MCAT questions. The MCAT stuff is more challenging, so if you can do well on it, you're in good shape for the PCAT. The Barrons MCAT Prep book Barron's MCAT with CD-ROM has lots of practice tests and it also has some good strategy instruction. Some of the strategy is real helpful on the PCAT too, though of course some of the strategy doesn't apply. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very easy exams By John Nguyen The explanations are pretty good, but the exams in this book were way too easy. It barely went over organic chemistry. The PCAT exam is much harder. Review I would strongly recommended this review to medical students both at all stages of their undergraduate training, but particularly in the run-up to finals, and to trainee pathologists intending to sit the new style part 1 exam. Most helpful customer reviews 43 of 43 people found the following review helpful. Just Get It! By 46&2 This is the best question book for both path and Step I. There's a decent mix of questions based on long clinical vignettes along with shorter ones, much like Step I. Due to Step I's emphasis on pathology, I think this resource is almost just as valuable as the vaunted Kaplan Q bank (which is an inferior source for path questions but good on other subjects). The authors seem to do a better job of analyzing shelf exams and patterning their questions after them than other resouces such as Pretest or Appleton and Lange.Expect 40-60 questions per chapter of Robbins covering important as well as esoteric aspects of path. Certain diseases rarely appear in reality but show up as often as the common cold on exams- this book usually hits them. It also does a great job in asking second order questions (i.e. not just the diagnosis but things associated with a disease like ectopic hormones, associated symptoms, etc). These questions are both frustrating and difficult, but absolutely essential in doing well on exams. It also presents cases well, making you diagnose a disease based more on clinical presentation than definitive imaging or lab tests, which was huge on Step I. The key to standardized exams are the standardized scenarios consistently tested over the years- this book knows them. The closest to Step I and the Path shelf you can get.I almost recommend the 1st edition over the 2nd. The 2nd has more, newer questions, and elaborates more on the question stems. This is a double-edged sword, though; the longer stems tend to bog you down and make you spend more time without much more benefit in learning. The 2nd ed does have a decent final question review, though.Recommend doing questions as you take the path course, then one more time for the shelf/Step I; I used it conjunction with a good path review, which was Goljan's Rapid Review for me. I was having difficulty on my school's path exams but I credit this and the Goljan book for helping me get 98 percentile on the shelf and 258 on Step. 26 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Great Book for USMLE 1 By A Customer Okay so this book was my primary review book for Path for the Boards I loved the questions and explanations. I used it with First Aid. It has like 1100 questions and in my opinion completely reviews the most impt points in path for you in question format. The questions are very similar to the board in layout with the clinical presentations. Kaplans questions are similar to it but in my opinion this book offers more questions for path and the material is organized for a complete review. Just do like one block/chapter in it per day and read the explanations. This book is your best path review for the exam because its in question format!! My other review books that I liked were. In the Made Ridiculously Series the: Neuroscience, The Anatomy, especially Microbio Made Ridiculously Simple. For pharm and biochem first aid has all you need to know. BRS Physio is also excellent. These were my books hope it helps you. 25 of 25 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent Companion for Any Usmle Review Book By Rodney Eddi This is a very good test book. It is based on Robbins Pathology books. All pictures and slides are from Robbins books. It contains more than 1000 questions, mostly in clinical vignette format. Questions are very well prepared and reflect the clinical picture of each disease entity very well. Each chapter covers most of the needed items for USMLE Step 1. Answers are not exhaustive, but they are enough. I always recommend the combination of BRS Patholgy and this book as the best pathology source for Step 1. See all 33 customer reviews...
Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem-Solving Approach
The first comprehensive presentation for clinicians of the groundbreaking approach popularized in Ross Greene's acclaimed parenting guide, The Explosive Child, this book provides a detailed framework for effective, individualized intervention with highly oppositional children and their families. Many vivid examples and Q&A sections show how to identify the specific cognitive factors that contribute to explosive and noncompliant behavior, remediate these factors, and teach children and their adult caregivers how to solve problems collaboratively. The book also describes challenges that may arise in implementing the model and provides clear and practical solutions. Two special chapters focus on intervention in schools and in therapeutic/restrictive facilities.

Review “Greene and Ablon have done it again. This book illustrates their clinical acumen, conceptual sophistication, and scientific rigor--all at the same time! This is an uncommonly useful book for students and for therapists at all levels of experience. The authors' collaborative problem-solving approach takes into consideration the delicate dance between poorly regulated children and their frustrated and sometimes poorly equipped parents. These children and their families require special interventions, and this innovative book goes a long way to helping us in our clinical practice, teaching, and research.”--Thomas H. Ollendick, PhD, Child Study Center and Department of Psychology, Virginia Tech"Provocative, conceptually grounded, and clinically wise. The CPS approach looks at a range of common, vexing parent-child problems and applies sound individual and family strategies, innovatively framed in the context of children's deficits in executive functions, communication, and emotion regulation. Loaded with case examples, this is essential reading for all those who work with 'externalizing' children."--Stephen P. Hinshaw, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of California, Berkeley"This cutting-edge book provides a practical and easily understood guide for treating explosive children and adolescents. It presents an innovative, compassionate model that is very helpful in improving the quality of life for these kids and those who care for them." --Michael S. Jellinek, MD, Child Psychiatry Service, Massachusetts General Hospital; Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School"Greene and Ablon's CPS approach is an excellent integration of theory, research, and clinical wisdom. The authors present a thoughtful clinical framework and specific procedures for interpreting and managing children's explosive, noncompliant behavior. This book belongs on the bookshelf of every clinician who works with these youngsters."--Howard Abikoff, PhD, Institute for Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders, NYU Child Study Center

Schmitt Ever since my child was about 4 I have been wondering what he "had"....what his behavioral issues were all about. Three therapists later, psychological testing, and countless offerings of advice from friends, parents and teachers I have finally found an explanation that rings true and speaks to my husband and me. My son is now 14. How I wish I had known about this "CPS approach" years ago. The approach is not "Magic 123" (and therefore simplistic) but if it's followed, it works. I first read Dr. Greene's other book aimed at parents called "The Explosive Child" which is also wonderful. "Treating Explosive Kids" is directed at therapists and is therefore more dense and a little more difficult to understand for the lay person but the book is filled with dialogue between professionals, parents, and kids which brilliantly and realistically illustrates how to treat a child who is inflexible, explosive, and therefore incredibly frustrating. Guess what: these kids are not simply being manipulative or looking for attention. 32 of 32 people found the following review helpful. A Must for Clinicians AND School Staff By L. David Epstein This is by far the best approach I have ever encountered for children who are easily frustrated, chronically inflexible, and explosive (as well as those who "shut down" rather than explode). As a clinical and school psychologist who has worked with such children and families for over 15 years, this approach is the one that works when so many others have failed. The book, which is for school personnel as well as clinicians, helps people who are just starting to use the model as well as those who have been using it for a while and would like additional information, ideas, etc. It is written in clear, easy to understand language, and the stories, vignettes, and dialogs are especially helpful in illustrating how to use the approach and clarifying some of the aspects of the model. I refer back to it often as I prepare for school staffings, parent meetings, client sessions, etc.If you are a clinician who works with children in any setting, or anyone (teacher, administrator, counselor, dean, etc.) who works with these students in a school setting, this book is an absolute necessity. It is especially important for school personnel, because the core of this model involves teaching skills in the settings in which the problem behaviors occur and teachers are experts at teaching skills. If we can intervene with these students early, in the general education setting, I firmly believe we can prevent more serious difficulties with these students later on. Schools continually struggle with these types of behaviors and need effective models such as this.If you are a parent of an explosive child, I highly recommend the companion parent book, The Explosive Child by Dr. Ross Greene. 28 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Provides solutions By K.Moore I purchased 'Treating Explosive Kids' out of frustration of trying to figure out how to work with one of our grandchildren (age 7) who seems unable to control his temper and outbursts. While other family members said it was just 'bad behavior' I felt there was something much deeper to this behavior. I think Dr. Greene has finally provided not only an answer, but some very do-able solutions. I realize this particular book was probably aimed more at professionals, I found it exceptionally helpful. The sample dialogs between doctor and parents, doctor and children provided real-life scenarios that could be used as examples in using the Collaborative Problem Solving Approach. This book, as well as well as the corresponding video I purchased, have finally given hope that explosive children can be helped as long as the adults/caregivers are willing to work at it. Aldousari 'Medical Microbiology and Immunology: Examination and Board review' is more than a good book. The organization and contents of the book are great. Summaries of the most important microorganisms at the end of each section of the book make it excellent for quick reviewing what one has just read. Also, the book includes unique chapters like normal flora, laboratory diagnosis, and vaccines which are really helpful. The immunology section extensively provide a solit understanding of the immune mechanisms, using illustrative figures and mnemonics. Moreover, the MCQs at the end of the book, along with the clinical cases, emphasize on the important areas in medical microbiology. One more thing I have to complement is the use of bold font in the book; this made skimming chapters quickly before a final microbiology exam a 'stressless' event, and gave confidence. To be neutral in my review, the book lacks a good mycology section (You need another book for mycology). Worst book, Worst professor, April cannot let go of his pride By omfssdd For those columbia students who are buying this for their anatomy course, a warning. This book is outdated. the pictures are in black and white, and there are only a handful of them. you must study with a netters. Ernest April is a penny pinching egomaniac who won't let go of the fact that he published a book...really more of an outline, about 40 years ago. This book is out of print. for a reason. There are innumerous errors throughout the book. MAJOR ERRORS. he calls them "errata". He sells his CD -which is this book in a hard to use CD format, where you can only see one section at a time, for 20$. If you have an older version of the CD -also littered w/ errata, he will sell you a new CD for 10$. He is THE worst lecturer, and this is THE worst way to learn anatomy if you have had no prior experience (which most students have not had). I can only hope that he will no longer be teaching next year. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Surgeon and MacArthur fellow Gawande applies his gift for dulcet prose to medical and ethical dilemmas in this collection of 12 original and previously published essays adapted from the New England Journal of Medicine and the New Yorker. If his 2002 collection, Complications, addressed the unfathomable intractability of the body, this is largely about how we erect barriers to seamless and thorough care. Doctors know they should wash their hands more often to avoid bacterial transfer in the ward, but once a minute does seem extreme. Using chaperones for breast exams seems a fine idea, but it does make situations awkward. "The social dimension turns out to be as essential as the scientific," Gawande writes—a conclusion that could serve as a thumbnail summary of his entire output. The heart of the book are the chapters "What Doctors Owe," about the U.S.'s blinkered malpractice system, and "Piecework," about what doctors earn. Cheerier, paradoxically, are the chapters involving polio and cystic fibrosis, featuring Dr. Pankaj Bhatnagar and Dr. Warren Warwick, two remarkable men who have been able to catapult their humanity into their work rather than constantly stumble over it. Indeed, one suspects that once we cure the ills of the health care system, we'll look back and see that Gawande's writings were part of the story. (Apr.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Bookmarks Magazine A surgeon at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and an assistant professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, Dr. Atul Gawande succeeds in putting a human face on controversial topics like malpractice and global disparities in medical care, while taking an unflinching look at his own failings as a doctor. Critics appreciated his candor, his sly sense of humor, and his skill in examining difficult issues from many perspectives. He conveys his message—that doctors are only human and therefore must always be diligent and resourceful in fulfilling their duties—in clear, confident prose. Most critics' only complaint was that half of the essays are reprints of earlier articles. Gawande's arguments, by turns inspiring and unsettling, may cause you to see your own doctor in a whole new light.Copyright © 2004 Phillips & Nelson Media, Inc. From Booklist Quick. What mundane practice, regularly propagated by generations of moms, could save the lives of thousands of hospital patients? To Brigham & Women's Hospital general surgeon and New Yorker staff writer Gawande, that question's answer is but one way to improve a profession where a "C+" performance rating just isn't good enough. The follow-up to Gawande's critically acclaimed Complications (2002) is a sparkling collection of essays about medical professionals and places where "better" either has or is becoming the norm, where excellence is a journey rather than a destination. While acknowledging that varying levels of achievement are inevitable in any human endeavor, Gawande believes the medical profession must assume the burden of constant diligence to do better because lives hang in the balance. Rather than preaching about improving performance, Gawande bears witness to the remarkable levels of care that can be achieved by describing some incredibly innovative, adaptive, and even mundane (e.g., conscientious hand washing) practices in hospitals from Boston to the rural Indian village of Uti, from Pittsburgh to Iraqi battlefields. Most helpful customer reviews 184 of 192 people found the following review helpful. Difficult problems are ... difficult By Stephen R. Laniel First, as a quick proxy of how good it is, and as a way of enticing busy readers, I should note that I finished Atal Gawande's book Better: A Surgeon's Notes On Performance in less than four hours. I can't remember the last time that happened. True, it's a relatively short book, and I had some uninterrupted time on a bus. But mostly it's that Gawande is a straightforward, energetic, thoughtful writer whose essays relentlessly pull you forward. Each discusses one or two ideas in enough depth to make you realize that they're not easy problems -- which is all most people need, and which does a world of good on its own. Every country has its unquestioned assumptions; it's the rare writer who helps us question them and gently remind us that if there were easy solutions, we'd have found them by now. Gawande is good at that. The most moving and thought-provoking of these essays, to me, was "The Doctors of the Death Chamber," in which Gawande interviews four doctors (whom he labels "A," "B," "C" and -- wait for it -- "D," in order to secure their anonymity) who help states carry out the death penalty humanely. The use of "humanely" here is questionable; it's humane in the sense that, if we are to use the death penalty, we must not be needlessly cruel at the time of the criminal's death. But it's inhumane in the larger sense that we are furthering a corrupt system -- we are "tinker[ing] with the machinery of death," to use Justice Blackmun's words. Since a doctor's role is to protect human lives, are anaesthesiologists who help execute people painlessly violating their roles? To put it more succinctly: should a doctor make the best of the machinery of death, or should he take no part in the machine? The American Medical Association has its answer and its role. Democratically elected governments have their own. It's Gawande's job to teach us that easy answers don't exist for complicated problems like this. One reason it's so easy to come up with easy answers for questions like this is that we rarely come face to face with the system we critique. Gawande does the legwork for us. He's at his best, in this regard, when he interviews a medical-malpractice attorney, a doctor, and the family of a dead patient involved in one malpractice case. We're all inclined to boo at the malpractice attorney . . . right up to the moment we feel we've been wronged, when that attorney is the man we want on our side. Gawande knows that this is how we work, so he takes some time to look at a case when doctors failed other doctors: Gawande's friend Bill Franklin found that doctors had failed to treat a tumor on Franklin's son that they should have noticed years before -- that someone had actually singled out on an X-ray for further study. This is the test case where ethics hits the road: when it's your own son, and you're a doctor, and you're well aware of the expenses of medical malpractice, what do you do? After trying other routes, Franklin did what so many others do: he sued and won. (Along the way Franklin helped establish a precedent in the Massachusetts Supreme Court, in the case of Franklin v. Massachusetts General Hospital et al., affecting the statute of limitations on malpractice cases. Seems worth reading.)Better contains lots of great little insights into the medical profession -- for instance, how difficult it is to get doctors and nurses to wash their hands as often as is safe for patients, or the awkwardness of a male doctor palpating a naked female patient. Throughout it all, Gawande's organizing principle is to lay out for us the system in which doctors work, the limitations they operate under, and how they make the best within those limitations.I'm less inclined than I used to be to believe that Gawande has an agenda, but I do think that a slightly different arrangement of the chapters within Better

Accurate, clear and comprehensive immunological knowledge By Irma Aguilar, Immunology Department, Mayo Clinic (aguilardelfin.irma@mayo.edu) Janeway's Immunobiology is probably the best immunology book that someone really interested in immunology should take to the mythical desert island. One can enjoy it by its clarity from the basic graduate courses, and then keep reading it when doing research and pursuing hypothesis on the most advanced immunological topics. Many times I have found better organized and complete information on this book (even the old editions!) than on the latest reviews on specialized journals. The intense and careful work displayed to promote the real understanding on the concepts and the relations between immune components is impressive. Even more, the success in explanation is such that the authour takes the risk to have his book neglected as "too easy" by first time readers. However, immunology researchers in contact with the often chaotic and contradictory immunological literature can really appreciate the incredible amount of critical work invested and the intellectual gift of the author (authors) to abstract complex immune phenomena into nicely designed and biologically precise "cartoons". The focus on the evolutionary and functional consequences/origins of the immune mechanisms and structures makes Janeway's book one of the most refreshing and valuable voices in a sometimes too-technically oriented discipline. An impressive accomplishment never praised enough. 21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Undergrad, or grad wanting the basics--this is the book !! By Angela Demeritt I cannot say enough good things about this book. I'm a graduate student in Microbiology and Immunology, but my undergraduate major was in biochemistry. Having had NO immunology classes before, I felt myself beginning to drown in my first graduate immunology class... I knew I needed help (there was no textbook for this lecture-only class), and went searching. This is the book I eventually bought. It saved me, big time! In plain language, and with easy-to-follow pictures throughout, this book literally taught me all about immunology--it is the reason I passed my classes; NOT sitting stunned in some lecture hall listening to some guy drone. It took some work, and I had to read the book almost front-to-back, but it is a WONDERFUL text. This book is not really a graduate caliber text, however. For specific and more technical aspects, books like the one by Paul are going to be the ticket. But even now, when looking to brush up on my basics, design pictures for a lecture, etc. I refer back to this book first. Only 3 years old, my copy is dog-eared, worn, and well-used. I often end up with classmates and professors asking to use it, too.If you find yourself desperate and failing in an immunology class, BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT. If you are taking any immunology text, and your prof has chosen a really cruddy book you are having difficulty understanding, do the same. If you're a professor trying to teach an immunology class, USE THIS BOOK. Make life a whole lot easier on your students--and you, when grading and evaluations time comes around! 11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Immunobiology By A Customer Janeway and his co-authors have prepared a masterful text with remarkably clear exposition of the myriad of details in this rapidly developing field. It is replete with illustrations, including cartoon-like diagrams, histological slides, and tables, each of which are used to illuminate the discussion as deemed helpful by the authors. They present an incredible amount of information, and the text, reflecting recent revision, is remarkably current. This volume is suitable as a text for a course in immunology for medical students, or as an introduction to the subject for graduate students requiring knowledge of the immune system.

A good book for your rotations By Mike_brazil This is a compact book following the same formula for the other manuals from this collection (Ex Washington manual). It is not a treatise and it is not intended to be so, quite the contrary. It is a pocket book, easy to carry and to manipulate. It cover all the topics you might need for your day to day life in the hospital in a short , but not too short, and up to date format. I like the fact that you can read any chapter in less than 30 minutes. I recommend this book for medical students in need of a compact book to carry during the GOB internship or for revising topics before an exam. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Useful for OB-GYN residents By K. McGill I think my entire class of OB-GYN residents bought this our intern year. I still use it now as a third year. It covers a lot of the information you can get pimped on, and explains it well. It is small enough to carry around, so those slow rotations, where you have 5-10 minutes throughout the day, this is a good resource. The only negative things I notice is that there is a lot of information, so you have to read instead of skim. And the book cannot fit into my white coat pocket. But definately one of the books I rely upon. 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Must Have for New RNs in Women's Health/L&D/Maternity Depts, etc. By Carrie M. Campbell I'm a new Rn (13 months) working on the L&D unit at a large teaching hospital in Orlando, FL and I've been researching maternity nursing software for a new smartphone/PDA that I plan to purchase. The search lead me to the Skyscape website and this Johns Hopkins manual. Skyscape allows you to download a trial form of the software onto your pc so that you can view the product before buying. This is the 5th item that i've viewed today alone and I'm so incredibly HOOKED on the manual that I plan to buy it from Amazon immediately and purchase the pda software (though I am a little apprehensive about the software now based on reading the second reviewers comments on here). Anyways, I will be precepting a graduate nurse in a couple of weeks and I will totally recommend that she purchase this manual as well because it provides an AWESOME, EASY TO READ, TO THE POINT, description, instruction and medication treatment (dosage, side effects & contraindications) for EVERYTHING that I've encountered thus far on L&D - and I've only read the section on "Normal Labor and Delivery, Operative Delivery, and Malpresentations". I wish I had read this when I first started working on the floor because it would've provided a GREAT transition into this field of nursing from nursing school. The information provided is SHORT, SPECIFIC and VERY CLEARLY WRITTEN. Even though the manual is written for med students, it totally provides a great learning tool for nurses as well because it will help me with anticipating the need of the physician when providing intrapartum care on the labor floor, which in turn increases provision of effective patient care. A big THANK YOU to the authors ! :o)) See all 6 customer reviews...

It gave me all the information I needed without meaningless minutia and was VERY high-yield for boards. I used it for my micro class during the year and it really helped, especially with group studying. The question-answer format is a great way to test yourself before exams and I found it to be a comprehensive review before I took boards. I recommend it to every med student looking for a thorough review for micro. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not a bad buy... By Dr House Everyone's learning is different... with that said... these deja series aren't bad as long as their not used for primary study. Their great for final review's before your exam to help boost your confidence and help you remember stuff you might have forgotten or couldn't remember. For this book, i didn't really have time to use the immunology section much b/c I was pressed for time, but i found the microbiology section useful. Not a bad buy at all. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not particularly memorable By HelloMedSchool I got this book to review for the Microbiology & Immunology shelf exam. I like the 2-column format of questions and answers in this book, but eventually, it got rather dense and did not keep my attention. See all 4 customer reviews...

It seems like nobody bothered to check the answers before they went to publishing and just left them in there leaving exam prepping students scratching their heads wondering if they're wrong or if it's the book. The two exams on the CD are just as bad or even worse. In the PAT sections, my initial scored had me scoring around a 17. After double and triple checking the answers, my score jumped up to a 25 after I added wrongfully graded questions back onto my raw score. For what it's worth though, at least the PAT strategy tips were sparingly helpful. Also, the biology science review is brief, but it does include a lot of the most important information that, if memorized, would benefit your score greatly. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. DAT Prep By Buckeye I heard about the bad reputation that this book had before I bought it but I am very glad I bought it! It has errors, but I feel as though the perceptual ability is amazing in this book! I thought this book was better than Kaplan's and it prepared me better, giving me word problem examples for the math section compared to a bunch of nonsense that Kaplan has in their book. I used Kaplan and Barrons study books, and I also reviewed internet material for biology and my textbook for chemistry. Kaplan is average for biology, chem and ochem but their perceptual ability is way too easy and the math section of the dat is primarily word problems and Kaplan I remember didn't even have 1 of them in there! I think Barrons is a great investment, especially since it is so cheap, it does give you some great questions to think about and prepare you for the actual test. Kaplan is just too broad and I almost thought it was useless besides the study questions that they give. I thought Barrons was a great piece of study material. I got a 21 AA and 21 PAT. No Kaplan class, just studied on my own for two full summers. Good luck to all of you! 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Partners of the Heart: Vivien Thomas and His Work with Alfred Blalock: An Autobiography
Visitors to the Blalock Building at the Johns Hopkins University Medical Center are greeted by portraits of two great men. One, of renowned heart surgeon Alfred Blalock, speaks for itself. The other, of highschool graduate Vivien Thomas, is testimony to the incredible genius and determination of the first black man to hold a professional position at one of America's premier medical institutions.Thomas's dreams of attending medical school were dashed when the Depression hit. After spending some time as a carpenter's apprentice, Thomas took what he expected to be a temporary job as a technician in Blalock's lab. The two men soon became partners and together invented the field of cardiac surgery.Partners of the Heart is Thomas's extraordinary autobiography. Trained in laboratory techniques by Alfred Blalock and Joseph W. Beard, Thomas remained Blalock's principal technician and laboratory chief for the rest of Blalock's distinguished career. Thomas very rapidly learned to perform surgery, to do chemical determinations, and to carry out physiologic studies. He became a phenomenal technician and was able to carry out complicated experimental cardiac operations totally unassisted and to devise new ones.In addition to telling Thomas's life story, Partners of the Heart traces the beginnings of modern cardiac surgery, crucial investigations into the nature of shock, and Blalock's methods of training surgeons.

Inspiring account of a man behind the scenes By chad t wilson As a medical student at the Johsn Hopkins University School of Medicine, I found it absolutely facinating to peer into the life of a man who worked side by side with Dr. Blalock to help develop some of the most important advances in surgery of the 20th century. I have seen the portrait that Mr. Thomas describes in the book still hanging in the atrium of the Blalock elevators. I recommend this book to anyone interested in medical or surgical history. 30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. If you've seen the movie, now read the book By M. Fields In this book you will hear from Vivien Thomas himself. As wonderful as the movie was, it did take some dramatic license here and there. Vivien tells the story of the first "blue baby" operation very matter of factly. As you read the book you will discover that he played things pretty close to the vest. He was not one for dramatic outbursts or fits of temper. Thomas is a dignified quite man and his relation with Dr. Blalock was not all sweetness and light but they worked well togehter and became very close. There is a lot of medical talk in the book. The squeemish may have trouble getting through the accounts of the experiments that were performed on the dogs. Don't let that stop you from reading this book. It gives you a wonderful insight into this modest, unassuming but brilliant doctor. He never went to medical school but taught some of the finset surgeons in the world how to operate. Happily, Thomas was finally given an honorary doctorate by Johns Hopkins. If you have seen the movie, don't expect this book to play out the same way. This is real life.Enjoy! 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful.
