Peripheral Nerve Blocks: Principles and Practice

4 STAR DOODY'S REVIEW! "The book can serve as an introduction, a refresher, or a supplement, depending on the experience and background of the reader. The authors are well regarded for their teaching, research, and clinical abilities....The book covers basic and advanced regional anesthesia techniques. It includes mostly classic approaches, but also offers some novel techniques for both single shot and continuous nerve blockade. The illustrations are superb, especially those that reveal the underlying structures, providing an almost three-dimensional view of the relevant anatomy."--Doody's Review Service Authored by the world's leading authorities, this is an authoritative, full-color instructional manual for mastering nerve block techniques. Beautifully illustrated with 350 color illustrations, including 175 clinical photographs of actual patients.

By Michael Frederickson This text complements the outstanding NYSORA website the authors have already developed. This is the best text on regional anaesthesia I have ever seen. How is it different from all the rest. 1. It really makes a good attempt at removing the voodoo element from peripheral nerve blockade. The word 'pop' is never used. 2. They don't describe a list of approaches, only the one that is the most effective, reliable and easiest to teach. 3. Information is grouped into categories such as 'surface landmarks' and 'block at a glance' for quick and easy reference. 4. Very nice colour illustrations/photos. The only real criticism I would make is that there could be more devoted to disposable pumps and continuous peripheral nerve blocks at home, and possibly mention of the current role of ultrasound. An excellent book for trainees and experts. I have looked through the other regional texts on sale at Amazon and in my opinion this is by far the best. 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Excellent boook By Dr. S. Raftery This text is based on the work put into the www.nysora.com website over the past several years. The book covers a pretty wide collection of regional blocks, but omits dealing with spinals and epidurals. Each block is explained covering the essential anatomy, surface anatomy, detailed technique and sevceral practical tips and hints for when things do not go quite according to plan. I recommend the text very highly 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is THE book to get for nerve blocks. By Q-fever I searched far and wide for the ideal regional book. I compared illustrations, methods, descriptions, price...everything. This exceeded my expectations. The book starts with a section entitled "training in PNB", which could be useful for an academic department trying to implement a structured regional anesthesia program or perhaps a private group looking to improve the group's delivery of regional anesthesia. Next is the excellent chapter on "essential regional anesthesia anatomy". Ch. 3 is a very practical guide as to what equipment the department will need (including needles, syringes, drugs, airway, etc). There are chapters on pharmacology, complications, and general tips for success. The meat of the book starts on p.90 (ch.8). This is where the book truly shines. Each chapter describes a block and follows the same format. It opens with "Block at a Glance", a short bulleted list that succinctly describes indications, landmarks, needle, amount of local and level of difficulty. Then it delves into the anatomy, distribution of the block, positioning, equipment, landmarks, and detailed step by step intstructions. There are numerous illustrations and glossy photos, countless practical tips on what to do if you fail to get twitches on the first pass, choice of local, everything. Keep in mind, this is not meant to be a comprehensive catalogue of every possible way to block so-and-so nerve. It is a pratical instruction manual meant to teach you a few of the most useful blocks. The techniques may not coincide with the way you were taught but these are the tried and true techniques as perfected by the docs at NYSORA. In summary, even if you haven't done a PNB since residency, this book will allow you to start performing them again with confidence. It's your one-stop source. See all 7 customer reviews...
