The best tool available for NCE examination By Kyle Lassiter I was in a study group with a VP of our organization who had been a therapist for years, but was only then, (1995) seeking licensure. He purchased approx 1500.00 worth of study aids to help him pass the exam since he had been out of school for so long.(20 years) The Rosenthal book (he also had tapes, don't know if he still does) were the cheapest and best study aid for this exam. Many of the questions were right off the exam, but even those that weren't helped us with the format of the test questions and the type of material on the test. None of the four in our group got less than an 83% on the test and two of our group were in the low to mid 90's. Rosenthal's book is an excellent resource and one you will not regret getting. 20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Encyclopedia of Counseling: Master Review and tutorial for the National Counselor Examination and State Exams By Susan Lacey While I am still two weeks away from taking the test, I purchased the online program @ $235 and borrowed an old copy of the $250 NCE Study Guides. After comparing several sections, it appears this $50 book is more valuable than the others. One of my professors used it, and blew the test away. The head of our department states that you WON'T know all of the material anyway. Your best bet is to practice answering these types of questions. By the time you go through this book twice, major points are driven home. I plan to spend my last two weeks with this source only. 20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Great review for exams! By TXCouns I passed my NCE and TX LPC easily after using primarily this book and studying the DSM IV TR. It's easy to read, and explains not only why the answers are correct, but also why all the others are wrong. It's not meant to teach you from scratch, but it's a great review, and if you find there is something unfamiliar, it gives you an idea of the areas to grow and study more in. The Lost Art of Healing: Practicing Compassion in Medicine

The real crisis in medicine today is not about economics, insurance, or managed care--it's about the loss of the fundamental human relationship between doctor and patient. In this wise and passionate book, one of our most eminent physicians reacquaints us with a classic notion often overlooked in modern medicine: health care with a human face, in which the time-honored art of healing guides doctors in their approach to patient care and their use of medical technology.Drawing on four decades of practice as a cardiologist and a vast knowledge of literature and medical history, Dr. Lown probes the heart and soul of the doctor-patient relationship. Insightful and accessible to all, The Lost Art of Healing describes how true healers use sympathetic listening and touch to hone their diagnostic skills, how language affects the perception of illness, how doctors and patients can cultivate a relationship of trust, and how patients can obtain the most complete and beneficial care through a combination of healing techniques and conventional practices. As Dr. Lown explains, the art of healing does not mean abandoning the spectacular advances of modern science, but rather incorporating them into a sensitive, humane, enlightened approach to medical care. With its urgent message and poignant, fascinating vignettes, The Lost Art of Healing is a book of vital, universal importance.

From Publishers Weekly Too many well-trained, well-credentialed doctors fail to take a careful patient history, indulge in rampant overuse of technology and excessively prescribe drugs that result in death or disability, charges Lown, a cardiologist and professor emeritus at Harvard Medical School. In these gracefully written essays, full of interesting vignettes and case studies drawn from his 45 years of practice, he urges doctors to practice attentive listening, to desist from using intimidating language and to pay attention to the emotional stresses in patients' lives. Keeping an open mind toward alternative medicine, Lown describes his partially successful treatment in China with acupuncture for his severe back pain. He also looks at the challenges of caring for the elderly and shares helpful insights on death and dying. His stimulating inquiry is sound medicine for doctors and patients alike. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal Despite huge technological advancements, today's medicine is in a state of crisis, claims Lown (professor emeritus in cardiology at Harvard and cofounder of Physicians Against Nuclear War). Emphasizing that nothing can replace listening and careful history taking, Lown laments that doctors have now substituted technology for taking time with the patient, shifting their medical focus from healing the patient to curing the disease. In a teaching style reminiscent of Sir William Osler, Lown extracts from his 50 years of medical practice case histories and examples of the clinical wisdom that enable a doctor to comprehend essential medical problems. Despite his Oslerian call to return today's depersonalized medicine to the art of doctoring, he evinces little optimism that his wisdom will be heeded in this age of Medicare and managed care. Recommended for all medical collections.?James Swanton, Harlem Hospital Lib., New YorkCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist Cardiologist Lown combines autobiography with a plea for thoughtful and individual medical care of each patient. Although he draws his case illustrations from 40 years of practice and research, his is no nostalgic voice reporting from some comfortable ivory tower. He vigorously opposed the traditional prolonged bed rest for heart patients, pioneered in the establishment of cardiac care units, invented direct current cardioversion, which has saved many lives, and made other valuable contributions. He was one of the first Western physicians to visit China and later benefited from acupuncture treatments. In 1985 he and a Russian physician, cofounders of Physicians Against Nuclear War, received the Nobel Peace Prize. Healing, he asserts, has been replaced in his time by treating, caring by managing, and the art of listening by technological procedures. He points out that malpractice cases are not the cause of what ails U.S. medicine but are instead a symptom of the real cause--failure in the art of healing. William Beatty

Helping physicians recapture their focus By Gary Margolias I bought a copy for myself, and now I am trying to give a copy to everybody I know who is involved in patient care. Most of us went into the medical field with noble aspirations to take care of others and in doing so, to grow ourselves as human beings. The process of going through a medical education debases in many respects our initial aspirations. I read this book and found myself recentered. Dr. Lown approaches medicine as an opportunity to glean from the people for whom he cares. The book is filled with anecdotes gathered from decades of doctoring. The stories lead the reader along the same journey that the author has taken in coming to a sense of himself as a healer. The characters whom have filled his life are interesting and the story of Dr. Lown's personal journey from medical student, to researcher to teacher and master clinician, is fascinating. I highly recommend this book. It has changed the way that I approach my work and given me a zest for opportunities to grow in this profession. 15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding medical humanism By Thomas H. Bracken This is an incredible book. Written by the cardiologist who helped bring us DC cardioversion, and lidocaine for arrhythmias, it surprisingly focuses on the human aspects of medicine. He makes several critical points: the most important task for us as physicians is to first listen to our patients. He encourages us to make our diagnoses and prognoses on the basis of careful history taking and examination, rather than by laboratory testing. He also exhorts us to take the responsibility of appropriately reassuring and encouraging our patients, rather than just always hedging our bets to cover our malpractice worries. The book is very well written and edited, and contains dozens of fascinating doctor/patient vignettes. He explores the boundaries of the patient/doctor relationship, and is well aware of the times it leads him astray. He is not afraid to interject his personal religious philosophy (as an agnostic from a Jewish background) but respects those with other opinions. This text contains far more valuable information for physicians than any biochemistry or histology text. Hopefully wise Deans will make it required reading for their medical schoolThomas H. Laycock I have often been frustrated by "study guides," left with the feeling that I didn't really get value for my money . . . the same can not be said for this study guide. Answers are given at the back, but more important the answers come with rationals that help to truly "OWN" the concept. Buy it or wish you had later. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. It's ok By Amanda Some of the questions in here are outrageous compared to what I read in the textbook. Stuff that was stated in only a sentence or two in the textbook would have really in depth questions in this study guide. I only use the multiple choice questions. The rest is kind of useless for me because we don't have anything other than multiple choice on our tests in class. A lot of times I don't even bother using this. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. sloppy By Joseph R. Obermeier I started to use this by using the labeling diagrams. The labeling lines don't point to the correct areas. The are too long or too short. Mosby needs to hire some good proofreaders. Also, there are word searches. Who has time to do a word search when all you really want to do is state the term being described. You know it but now you have to find it in a puzzle. Hmmmm. Maybe if the had a Sudoku puzzle to help me learn lab values. I put this book in the "waste of time and money" pile. See all 19 customer reviews...

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. This book provides a practical approach to writing objectives as intended learning outcomes. It describes and illustrates how to state instructional objectives in terms of the types of performance students must demonstrate to show that they have achieved the goals of the instruction. The procedure can be used with all types of learning outcomes and is especially useful with complex learning outcomes such as thinking skills, performance skills, and problem solving. As education moves toward a more comprehensive and integrated approach to learning, there is a need for instructional objectives that can clearly describe these broader learning outcomes in performance terms. The important role of objectives in the teaching-learning-assessment process is stressed. The text shows how well-written instructional objectives contribute to more effective instruction and improved student learning. Part I describes how to get started in writing instructional objectives, how to use objectives in planning for instruction and assessment, how content standards can serve as a general framework for writing objectives, and some factors to consider in preparing instructional objectives. Part II describes and illustrates how to write objectives for cognitive learning outcomes (ranging from knowledge to thinking skills), affective outcomes, and two levels of performance outcomes (traditional performance skills and problem-solving skills). Part III describes and illustrates how to use instructional objectives in the construction and interpretation of achievement tests and in the assessment of performance and affective outcomes. This edition differs from the last edition in the following ways: Chapter 1 was rewritten to clarify the differences between objectives at the training level and objectives used for higher-level learning outcomes, and to describe the relation of content and performance standards to instructional objectives. A new Chapter 3 describes the use of instructional objectives in planning for teaching and assessment. Material from a later chapter on the use of objectives in teaching was moved here so that students could better understand, early on, why they need to learn how to write objectives. A new Chapter 4 describes the use of content standards as a means of improving student learning and how instructional objectives relate to them. Chapter 11 now includes sections on the use of a simple table of specifications for item writing and the use of objectives for interpreting test results. Chapter 12 contains new information and new illustrations for preparing assessment instruments. Changes and additions to several other chapters now clarify or further illustrate the method of stating objectives as intended learning outcomes. These improvements in the book should add to its usefulness as a guide for writing instructional objectives and using them in teaching and assessment. My special thanks to the reviewers for their suggestions for desirable changes: James Berry, University of Maryland, College Park; Susan P. Giancola, University of Delaware; Keith D. Hepner, California University of Pennsylvania; and Jane Hughey, Texas A&M University. Thanks also go to Calvin K. Claus for the list of verbs in Appendix C, to the editorial staff of Merrill/Prentice Hall, and to Irene Palmer for her excellent typing. N. E. G.

If you want to teach yourself massage. 2. If you massage school gave you a crappy Milady's massage book, or worse, their own hand written, poorly illustrated version. 3. If you really want to own a great massage therapy reference. Why I think its so great: The illustrations and visuals, give you everything you need to know to massage any area of the body. They have created a much more 3-d experience to learning massage from a book and translating that experience to a real body. ANYONE can learn from this book. Its an incredible resource. I don't know why every school doesn't use this book! If you are in school -- buy it! I borrowed this from my library before purchasing it. It is a must for an massage therapist, bodyworker, or closet healer! Also great for National exam review. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. The best there is out there... By Darren Koh I have been using 'Doc' Clay's book as a reference for massage work, and it still stands as the best book for helping a therapist 'see' the muscles they are trying to work on. What you get in this book, is a reference book that shows the client, the therapist's hands on the client, and the muscles superimposed on the picture of the client. This makes this book an excellent reference book for me, as well as a client-education tool. The book takes you through each part of the body, from the head all the way to the foot. In each section, you get a picture, of the area in question, with the ligaments and muscles superimposed on. You will also get a picture with the therapist's hand/s on and get a good view of what needs to be done. On top of that, the book does function as a functional anatomy guide, as it does set out in point form, the attachment and action of the muscles in question, the possible referral areas if any, and a guide to other muscles to examine. Overall, this is a must-have on every therapists desk. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Just Great By Paul Lucas I have bought many books and DVD's on massage and anatomy and this is by far the best. It acomplishes what others often fail at and what all my teachers tried to instill in me, looking at a body in a 3 dimensional way. Did I mention the DVD? I was soo suprised that it actually showed everthing (well at least all the anatomy, palaptations, striping and crossfibering) thats in the book. I am very glad I bought this book and see using it again and again, unlike several DVD's and books I currently have. See all 30 customer reviews...

There is too much to know about nursing to put it all in one book; but, you can be confident that you know what you should know in order to pass the NCLEX-RN by studying this one book. Okay for a student By Ballpoint Pen Name I found this book helpful when I did my first clinic in speech pathology in grad school. It showed me how to set up a treatment hierarchy (but I couldn't use the goals as they were because they didn't meet my supervisor's requirements), and some general things to do with clients. You won't use it as often as you use Hedge's resources. If you are a practicing SLP, don't get this book. If you are stocking a clinic library for students in an SLP program, consider it. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great book! By E. Umoh This is exactly the type of book that every grad student in SLP needs. It has pre-written goals for 22 disorders, from TBI to autism to tracheostomy/ventilator patients. This book is great for students working towards practice in the education or medical settings. And the treatment ideas are handy too! It's definitely a MUST HAVE for students at their first clinical practicum sites. I know that I'll have this book for many years to come. Get it! 5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Caveat Emptor By SLP in training This book really has a way of being VAGUE. I only gave it one star because there is no zero star rating available. Please be advised that the goals are not written in proper format. The goals do not correctly have normally expressed criterion, reference, the goals are almost always NOT MEASURABLE, the lingo used is not at all the way a goal would be written on even the most basic treatment plan. I was honestly very concerned when I read it and feel very comfortable challenging the authors to revisit it, if they seriously expect it to be taken seriously. This book is a trouble at the very least. See all 5 customer reviews...

High Yield for UT Memphis Medical Students By A Customer It is no secret that the questions in this book will prepare you well for the Medical Physiology course offered at the Univ of Tennessee College of Medicine. As Dr. Schneider himself often states, "I can only ask the same question so many ways." If you are enrolled at UT and want a good book to prep for the course then search no farther. If you are looking for a qood question book for the Boards, I would recommend the NMS series of System based question books or the Kaplan Q-bank. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great Physiology Review By Ryan Roy This book contains 900 good review questions, and the reasons behind the answers. These questions are at the level of difficulty for a first year medical student. If you are running out of study time, the questions and explanations cover the topics so well that even if they are read in a "cramming session" you can still learn some physiology See all 2 customer reviews...

Body of Knowledge: One Semester of Gross Anatomy, the Gateway to Becoming a Doctor

Medical Gross and Developmental Anatomy is the course every medical student dreads. As one aspiring physician described it to journalist-author Steve Giegerich, "it's the bridge you have to cross if you want to become a doctor." Four lab partners facing that notoriously difficult course at Newark's University of Medicine and Dentistry are Sherry Ikalowych, a former nurse and mother of four; Jennifer Hannum, an ultracompetitive jock; Udele Tagoe, a determined Duke graduate of Ghanian descent; and Ivan Gonzalez, a Nicaraguan refugee and unlikely medical student. This lively chronicle of each of their ambitions, failures, and successes has at its center Tom Lewis, the cadaver lying before them to be dissected. From their first face-to-face encounter with Lewis as an anonymous cadaver on the stainless steel table to a rich reverence for Lewis's generous donation of his body to science, what they each learn about medicine, compassion, life, and death makes for a fascinating insiders' account of the shaping of a medical professional.

From Publishers Weekly In 1999, journalist Giegerich accompanied four medical students at Newark's University of Medicine and Dentistry through a semester of gross anatomy, the pivotal course that brings first-year students face-to-face with a human cadaver. Those months in the lab, as well as considerable secondary research on physiology and the history of anatomy, have borne fruit in this sensitive, provocative book. A number of excellent medical school memoirs already exist, such as William Nolen's classic The Making of a Surgeon and Perri Klass's more recent A Not Entirely Benign Procedure. Nolen and Klass have the advantage of firsthand insight, but neither zeroes in on so novel and so critical an aspect of the medical school experience as Giegerich does. His observer status, by no means a handicap, allows him to sketch impassively yet compassionately the divergent lives of his four subjects, and his excellent reportage delivers the psychological and emotional trials of gross anatomy with razor precision. Novel also is Giegerich's account of the once-living person who shares this journey, Tom Lewis, a public school administrator and ardent Roman Catholic who donates his body to science. The reader comes to know him well, but to the anatomists, who must rely on the scalpel and their own wits to learn his identity, he is simply cadaver #3426. Giegerich makes a strong case for gifts to science by showing how Tom, a social activist while he was alive, profoundly affects the lives of these four medical students after he is dead. Like Nolen's classic memoir, Giegerich's sensitive study will be essential reading for anyone considering a career in medicine. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal Completing the freshman course, Medical Gross and Developmental Anatomy (GA), is one of the first bridges one crosses to become a physician. Journalist Giegerich succeeds admirably in taking readers through the five units of GA (head and neck, thorax, abdomen, and upper and lower extremities) at Newark's University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey so that the curious emerge with their imaginations satiated, their hands clean and odor free, but, alas, sans medical degree. Giegerich introduces the body donor, the embalmer, the school secretary who arranges for body donations, the students, and the anatomy faculty, letting us share in the experience all the way up to the memorial service that terminates the course before the dissected cadavers are sent to the crematory. Depending on his or her disposition, the reader is likely to be mesmerized, appalled, or emotionally depleted by these comprehensive and engrossing insights into the first-year med student's exposure to the complexity of the human body with its myriad Latinized structures, the unremitting pressures of memorization and ever-present exams, and a sprinkling of "cadaver juice" and practical jokes added to ease the tension. Human dissection is a fascinating and complex topic, and Meryl Levin's Anatomy of Anatomy (Third Rail, 2000) provides a pictorial complement to Giegerich's compelling text. For popular medical collections. James Swanton, Harlem Hosp. Lib., New York Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist For 14 weeks, Giegerich watched and listened at table 26 in the gross anatomy lab of the New Jersey Medical School as four students worked their ways physically, mentally, and psychologically through the basic medical-school course. They were Udele, an immigrant from Ghana; legal clerk Jen, daughter of a fireman; Ivan, one of nine members of a Nicaraguan refugee family; and 40-year-old Sherry, a nurse-anesthetist and married mother of four. Giegerich's acceptance by these remarkable students enables him to skillfully use much of their own language over the cadaver on table 26 (whose brief biography adds to the book's realism) and to report many of their comments about activities elsewhere and their attitudes toward them. He paints a heartening picture of these future doctors and their relationships with the medical faculty and one another. In conclusion, he notes faculty-student agreement that 14 weeks are too few for this important class, and he describes the faculty-student memorial service for those who donated their bodies to this particular course of medical education. Most helpful customer reviews 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Enlightening By c_leong73 I have to confess that I originally picked up this book to satisfy an intrinsically human morbid fascination with death, and what happens to bodies afterward. In the end, this book did much more than that.BODY OF KNOWLEDGE records the myriad of emotions experienced by four main characters, all first-year medical students at the New Jersey Medical School, as they struggle through the notoriously difficult course mandatory for all aspiring physicians, Gross Anatomy. These four students were assigned to each other as lab partners throughout the entire course, sharing one cadaver to work on. Although the identity of the cadaver remained anonymous to the students, Giegerich gives us an important glimpse into the life of the person who chose to donate his body to science, helping the readers know him as much more than just a science project.Having no involvement with the medical profession, this book allowed me a rare glimpse into the trials and tribulations faced by would-be doctors as they slave through medical school's toughest course. It also demystified the medical profession, enabling me to see physicians as people who are not so different from you and me save for their extra knowledge of the workings of the human body. For those who have dreams of going to medical school someday, this book also provides great encouragement when you discover the obstacles faced by the various characters prior to being accepted into NJMS.Most importantly, after reading this book, I have nothing but the utmost respect for those who have willed their bodies to science, so that future generations may benefit from the knowledge gained. Considering all the things done to their bodies in a gross anatomy lab, being a donor is, in the words of one of the characters in the book, the ultimate "selfless act". 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Biography of a Cadaver By Tim Smith Steve Giegerich has written a book about a subject matter not only fascinating and mysterious but for some bordering on the gruesome and macabre. He takes us along with four first year medical students as they journey through the Medical Gross and Developmental Anatomy course and lab at the University of Medicine and Dentistry, Newark. The book focuses on the four students who work at the same lab table and upon Lewis, the cadaver they have been provided to dissect. Despite the difficulty of learning to identify tissues, organs, veins and nerves, muscles and bones, they must also overcome their innate fear and resistance to dissect a fellow human. To make it easier for them, the identity of the cadaver isn't given to the students. However, readers are introduced to Lewis and learn about his life and personality and the human qualities and characteristics that made him unique and special, more than merely a lab subject. Even though the students don't know the specifics about Lewis, most seem to develop a profound respect for the person who has been so generous by donating his body to science. In fact, by the end of the semester, each student has developed a personal relationship and enduring memories of their experiences with Lewis, culminating in a formalized good-bye to this special person. For the reader, this unique book provides insight into the rigors of medical school and creates a different perspective on the meaning of "donating your body to science". It also traces the origins and history of dissection and of the illustrations used in the ATLAS OF HUMAN ANATOMY and GRANT'S DISSECTOR. Most importantly, BODY OF KNOWLEDGE helps the reader gain an understanding and respect for the generous people who donate their bodies so others can learn. For those reasons this book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It only lists 4 year programs By Maryann The book would be very good if it listed literally every nursing program (such as LPN, community colleges, etc.) However, it only lists 4 year colleges to get your BSN. Some of the schools have the tuition listed, and some don't. I also wish the book listed the pre-req's and/or enterance exam requirements of each college. I think it's actually a better idea to borrow this book from a library. It's decent only because it gives you a break down of the colleges in all the states with the contact info. (but no ratings). Perhaps, I'm picky, but it would be nice to include the info. This book is very barebones (if that's what you're looking for, then it's decent). See all 1 customer reviews...

Occupational and Physical Therapy in Educational Environments

Occupational and Physical Therapy in Educational Environments covers the major issues involved in providing lawful, team-oriented, and effective occupational and physical therapy services for students with disabilities in public schools. For those involved with students with disabilities, this book helps them make sound decisions about services that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of these children.Since the 1975 enactment of Public Law 94--142, which mandated that occupational and physical therapy be provided “as may be required by a handicapped child to benefit from special education,” this required link between therapy and education has continued to lead to confusion and controversy about which students should receive therapy in school and what types of services should be provided. The purpose of Occupational and Physical Therapy in Educational Environments is to clarify the major issues surrounding occupational and physical therapy in public schools, and to provide a framework for delivery of team- and family-oriented services that meet individual needs of students with disabilities. For those unsure of current regulations regarding handicapped students, or those who need clarification on the law, the book begins with a review of legislation and regulations. This begins to guide and shape schools’provision of therapy services. The following chapters assist occupational and physical therapists and important members of the educational teams of disabled students to make sound decisions about which students need school-based therapy services: Laws that Shape Therapy Services in Educational Environments: summarizes the major statutory law, federal regulations, and case law interpretation in which school-based practice is grounded. Pediatric Therapy in the 1990s: reviews contemporary theories of motor development, motor control, and motor learning that have had major impact on therapy for school-age children with disabilities. Related Services Decision-Making: describes a strong team approach to determining a student’s need for occupational and physical therapy services, which takes into account the unique characteristics of both the student and the educational team. Assessment and Intervention in School-Based Practice: describes an approach to assessment and intervention in schools that clearly illustrates a relationship between therapy and educational programs that result in meaningful outcomes for students. Challenges of Interagency Collaboration: reports on a qualitative study that points out that schools are not the only settings in which many students with disabilities receive services, so coordination between various agencies is essential to avoid gaps, overlaps, and cross purposes. Those who can benefit from Occupational and Physical Therapy in Educational Environments include occupational and physical therapists who work in public schools, school administrators, teachers, and even parents of disabled children.

A Great Surgery Review By A Customer This is as near perfect a surgery review text as you can find that will prepare you for both your third year surgery clerkship and NBME surgery subject exam and Step 2. This book is very quick reading and is FULL of tons of great diagrams, charts, CT, X-rays, U/S, angiograms, etc. It's written in a clinical cases format with specific and pertinent management questions and solutions, as well as differentials and diagnosing discussions, that will prepare you clinically for the wards, as well as prepare you for shelf exams (which contain a lot of patient management questions, many of which were discussed in this book). It also has enough anatomy and pathophysiology discussion for it to be useful as a source for background reading for surgeries you are planning on scrubbing in on. The radiographic images are especially useful, however, it would have been useful to have more diagnostic findings specifically labelled on many of the images. Most importantly, this is a book that you can realistically expect to finish and even master within the timeframe of your 8-12 week clerkship. Highly recommended. 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Nms Surgery Casebook By A. M. Jafary I really like this book. The book is presented in a case-based question/answer format. The book is written in narrative form (no bullets, or choppy info). I like the design of the book and it's easy to read and understand. The cases presented are classic and in-depth. It's a long read though, and may be too much for boards when its crunch time. I used it mostly for reference and when I didn't understand something when I was studying for Step 2. It's a great book for 3rd year surgery rotation and the shelf exam. Good luck!! 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book for shelf exam and surgery rotation. By Cyrus K. It not only teaches the basics of anatomy and physiology but covers comparative domestic animal anatomy as well. No longer will the vet tech have to depend on human anatomy texts or buy expensive, huge volumes on each separate animal. The book is beautifully written and distills complex, large topics into simple manageable material. For veterinarians, the book is a great way to quickly review anatomy of all the species. For the nonprofessional reader, it would be a fascinating look at how animals are the same and yet different. Bruce Hutton Success for tomorrow's business leaders is increasingly defined by a strong moral/ethical compass and an understanding of the complex relationships between social, environmental, and economic variables. Increasing numbers of students want to go to schools that help prepare them to identify and act on ethical issues, to understand how sustainable development principles can be used for competitive advantage and social good, and to become values based leaders. And, businesses are increasingly hiring students with these demonstrated skills. The Aspen Institute has provided the best most comprehenisive guide for students and professionals seeking to pursue an MBA that provides such skills to complement and enhance the traditional discipline skills. The school profiles provide a wealth of information, allowing students to gage the relative strengths of each program. There is no other guide I know of that is as comprehensive in terms of number of schools profiled world-wide and information on issues of social responsibility and sustainable development. This book is a must read for future MBAs that seek to make a living and a difference in this world. See all 1 customer reviews...

They are concise, clearly written and basically the best thing to study micro with. No question asked buy it! Update: These cards are epic. Every question on my USMLE exam and most questions on the qbank were drawn directly from these cards. They have made studying for micro a million times easier and in my opinion these cards are the single best, comprehensive and high yield source for the boards. (FYI I HATED micro in class). I got my exam back and I did very well. Not surprisingly micro was one of the areas were I destroyed the exam. 13 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Not really "flash cards" By AnonymousMed When I think of "flash cards" I think on one side there is a word, or a question, and I've got to figure out what is on the other side. I had bought these flash cards thinking there would be a clinical scenario on one side, with the bug on the other side with some important pertinent information. Instead, the bug's name was on BOTH sides (precluding you from guessing if you wanted to quiz yourself). This is essentially a review book that was placed on nice flash cards. These are NOT good for review, but might be good if you are first learning the material. Some of the flow charts are nice, but nothing you can't find in another review book. This is not a good resource if you just read the Micro section in First Aid and you want to see how much you've retained. I would not suggest these for USMLE Step 1 Studying. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good, but serious time commitment By medstudent Great detailed cards. I am currently studying for the boards and think that the vignettes on each card is extremely helpful in putting the microbiology into clinical context. The cards do take a serious time requirement and I would recommend pulling out the more high yield organisms to accelerate your review closer to the test date. See all 26 customer reviews...

Review "We use this book for Coaching Wellness Behavior Change, a core class for all Exercise and Health Science students at UMass Boston. Lifestyle behavior has become a targeted issue contributing to population health. This book provides all health professionals (and future professionals) with invaluable information on developing provider-client relationships that facilitate change."--Dana Commesso, MA, Lecturer, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts, Boston "At the heart of rehabilitation are two central tenets: First, the patient is a key member of the rehabilitation team. Second, the rehabilitation process requires patients to learn and utilize new adaptive behaviors. How do we make these two key notions come alive in our interactions with patients? This text is the answer to that question. It provides useful theory, evidence-based methods, and clinical examples. The material is accessible and does not assume advanced knowledge of psychology. The message and skills in this book should be part of the practice of every rehabilitation professional."--Stephen T. Wegener, PhD, ABPP, Director, Division of Rehabilitation Psychology, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Johns Hopkins University

Epstein Motivational Interviewing in Health Care By Rollnick, Miller and Butler As an experienced neurologist (read 'old')I have spent decades and read many books about interviewing: neurological, psychiatric, difficult, challenging, etc., etc. In serial publications over 20 years or more, Dr. Miller and others have refined the process of how to converse to effectively motivate patients to do what (you think) they should do. Doctors know that figuring out what a patient needs is only the beginning of the overall process. Selling the patient is important in medicine if optimum results are to be attained. This book is a communication guide. This book shows you how to convince the patient he needs and really wants to buy your product for his own good. In an intelligent and logically organized fashion, this thin book (2-3 hours max to get through, but then more time later to restudy and refine technique) provides a matrix from which to work to induce your patient to internalize wanting and needing to do what he should do for optimal health. It shows physicians or counselors how to begin therapy after making a diagnosis and reinforces a teamlike approach where resistance or escapism can often show up. If you recall the book The House of God, one of the first rules proferred was that the patient is always the one with the problem. This book guides the doctor to show the patient why he needs to take on his problem and be motivated to handle his part optimally for his own good. As I improve my use of these straightforward techniques, I am considering jettisoning the ballpeen hammer I used to use for the same purpose. There is nothing earth shattering here. I have and likely we all have used these techniques at times, but this book puts it together as I suspect few of us have done as concisely independently. I recommend this book strongly, and I would not buy any of the preceding ones (not that I have read them all, but it seems this book must be the denoument). This would be excellent reading in medical school and any time after. There is nothing this old dog likes better than learning and improving efficiency. Counseling is a big part of our job and one cannot help but improve technique and outcomes with these insights. My patients will fare better because I read this book and, well, what else is there? 27 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Improving Communications in the Health Care encounter By Edward Bernstein MD Most patients feel rushed and not heard in their encounters with health care providers. This clearly written "how to" book provides principles and examples of conversation that can improve the quality of communication around life style change between provider and patient. Listening rather than telling, and guiding rather than directing or preaching are difficult skills for health providers. Giving the patient "a voice and a choice" in making changes in their unhealthy behaviors is essential to successful outcomes. This practical guide to health behavior change has made a difference in my practice when patients give me permimssion to discuss their drinking, smoking, drug use, over eating, fitness and seat belt use with them. Motivational Interviewing By J. Davis A necessary read in my opinion! There are many practitioners that use a dominant directive style in patient education whos outcomes could benefit from this newer type of interviewing. It offers an approach that is empowering to the patient and allows the patient to discover their own will to work towards change. MI offers an approach that is more productive and it does not take more of

Most helpful customer reviews 19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Tell us your secrets, Jack! By Diego Banducci Jack Gourman is a former professor from the University of Michigan who compiles his rankings by calling professors in various departments at different schools and asking them which programs they think are the best in their field. Not a bad way to rank schools and programs if your sampling is statistically valid, but since Jack is vague about his methodology, we'll never know that. What we do know is that his rankings are noticeably skewed in favor of large state universities and especially the University of Michigan. For instance, most observers rank Harvard Stanford and Yale among the top three law schools, with Michigan between fifth and ninth, but Jack consistently ranks the Wolverines in the top three. (Hey! They've got a great football program, haven't they?)This approach produces ludicrous results in his rankings of undergraduate institutions (a separate book), but is less of a problem with graduate programs which are (1) the province of larger universities, and (2) subject to fewer constraints in their acceptance of out-of-state residents. The book is especially useful as a checklist of all of the major players in a particular discipline. Just remember to move all Big Ten schools down one to two notches, and the University of Michigan down three to four, and you'll end up with some pretty decent rankings. 15 of 21 people found the following review helpful. a good book to determine the academic reputation of a school By A Customer I think that this book is good for assessing the academic reputation of a school. It is highly correlated with the National Research Councils report on graduate schools. This is good because, for universities with graduate schools, and this includes all schools except liberal arts schools, their reputation is reflected in the quality of their Phd programs. Compared to the US News Report survey, it is a more accurate assessment of faculty quality. The US News survey includes reputation in its survey, but the method that they use is highly inaccurate(surveying deans of admission), so the reputation score is extremely biased and since it counts for 25 % of the score creates an unusable report. The only downside to the Gourman report is that it does not weigh student factors as heavily as it should. 12 of 18 people found the following review helpful. The most objective school ranking reference By A Customer I've used several major ranking references. I have found the Gourman Report to be the most accurate in rating educational institutions in terms of faculty quality and library - an often over-looked yet the MOST important resource for research in graduate schools and professional schools such as med schools, business schools and law schools.By contrast, other ranking reports tend to put too much emphasis on subjective opinions (mostly gathered via opinion polls) in their ranking calculations. Some put almost no emphasis on the size of the library; and some calculate a "library size to student population ratio", making a lousy library of a small school seems better than a good library of a big school.I have encountered many disenchanted students at small private universities who are disappointed at the lack of library resources and the small selection of classes in their particular programs. Their research is slowed down or made impossible because of the inadequacy of these resources. They would have avoided such disenchantment if they had used the Gourman Report.
